THE LEGEND SADDLE, 2003 WINNER
Prescott Resident Wins Roy Rogers Replica Silver Saddle!
Mary L. Herrick of Prescott, AZ was the lucky winner in a drawing held recently for The
Legend saddle, a close replica of Roy Rogers’s personal silver mounted saddle that he used
on Trigger in countless Republic feature films and in all 100 episodes of the Roy Rogers TV
Show. The original saddle will soon be cinched down on a rearing mounted Trigger in the new
Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Museum, scheduled to open later this month in Branson, MO.
The Opportunity Drawing was a fund raising project of the Happy Trails Children’s
Foundation in Apple Valley, CA. Tickets priced at $20 each or 6 for $100 were sold for almost
a year leading up to the drawing held near Norco, CA on Sunday, April 13, at END of TRAIL,
The World Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting and Wild West Jubilee. The Legend
saddle raised more than $60,000 for the abused children served by the foundation. Herrick
purchased 6 tickets including the winner, by mail in March. A frequent contributor to the
foundation, she has participated in other opportunity drawings benefiting the children, but this
is the first time her name has been drawn as the winner!
The Legend saddle was presented to Ms. Herrick at the historic Palace Saloon, on Whisky
Row along Prescott’s courthouse square, Saturday night, May 10, at 7 p.m. Attending the
presentation were Conrad and Jeanne Anderson, of Rocktree Ranch Enterprises, Paulden, AZ.
Anderson, an accomplished silversmith, spent more than 700 hours creating by hand each
individual piece of silver for the saddle, bridle, breastcollar and tapaderos. Jeanne Anderson made the unique red and
white corona roll that is fitted to the skirts of the saddle. Anderson, a career law officer, was formerly with the Phoenix
Police Department for 20 years and is now employed by the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Department.

THE LEGENDARY 1880’S PLAINS SADDLE, 2007 WINNER

Jim Morris of Caballos, NM, was the lucky winner in the most recent
Happy Trails Children’s Foundation saddle opportunity drawing. The winning
ticket was drawn during the Roy Rogers Jr. Concert, Sunday evening,
February 18, 2007 in Apple Valley, CA. Jim purchased the lucky ticket at the
2006 SASS Convention in Las Vegas, NV.

Even though Jim is a saddle maker by trade, he has proudly displayed his
new saddle in his saddle shop and stated that it has drawn many
compliments and led to orders for saddle pockets, rifle scabbards, tapaderos
and other items that he makes.

This award winning Legendary 1880’s Plains Saddle is a magnificent and
authentic hand-carved replica 1880’s stock saddle similar to those made
famous on the plains of old Wyoming. The saddle has all the classic lines
and details that were the Hallmark of a fine stock saddle of that era. This
authentic beautifully hand-carved piece was made by renowned Leather
Artist to the Stars, Will Ghormley, of Des Moines, IA. The award winning
outfit came complete with matching bridle, bit, tapaderos, martingale, lariat,
saddle pockets, saddle blanket, rifle scabbard and an authentic Hartford Model 1892 .45 Colt caliber lever action
carbine. To complement this extraordinary saddle was a beautiful custom saddle stand, made especially for the
Legendary 1880’s Plains Saddle. This solid oak stand was designed and created by Terry Kirk aka Diamond Back Jack
McCoy, SASS# 24761. We want to thank everyone who participated in this drawing which raised almost $68,000 to
benefit the abused children served by the foundation.

Watch for information about a spectacular new silver saddle that is currently being crafted in Idaho. Tickets will be
  available soon.

THE CLASSIC 1870'S STOCK SADDLE 2010 WINNER
In the midst of a thunder storm, at 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2010,
at the 29th Annual END of TRAIL, The World Championship of Cowboy
Action Shooting and Wild West Jubilee held at Founder’s Ranch, New
Mexico, the drawing for The Legendary 1870’s Stock Saddle and
accouterments was held. Miss Ginny Mac, the young and very talented
singer/song writer/musician from Ft. Worth, TX who along with her band
was performing at END of TRAIL, reached deep into the drawing drum
and drew out the winning ticket stub, #1336. Tammie Durfey, SASS Life
Member #19,727, alias Oklahoma Gold, of Beaver, OK was the lucky
  winner.
Tammie is a winning mounted shooter, CMSA Life Member Card #278.
A Senior Ladies Level 4 competitor, she lives on a ranch, is a working
cowgirl handling cattle almost daily, owns and trains horses, is an
announcer for arena sports and activities, and has traveled throughout
the country competing in mounted shooting matches. She is one very happy winner and has already put the saddle to
good use on the ranch and in the arena on her good Paint horse, Cowboy Gold.
“To say I was thrilled would be putting it mildly. I have purchased Happy Trails tickets in various drawings for several
years with the hope of winning but more with the idea of helping a worthy cause. To win anything is special but a prize
like this is truly a blessing,” stated Tammie.
The legendary and magnificent 1870’s Colorado style stock saddle was made by superb saddle maker and leather
artist, Will Ghormley of Des Moines, IA. Included with the saddle were a Calvary pattern combination halter/bridle
complete with a replica Calvary bit, reins, lead strap, and Officer’s rosettes. Also included were a pair of matching single
strap saddle pockets; a breast strap with a brass heart in the center; a rifle scabbard with an EMF Model 92 .45 Colt
lever action rifle with an octagon barrel; a saddle blanket and period correct grass rope lariat. Also included was a
unique custom deluxe oak saddle stand hand crafted by Terry Kirk.
Proceeds from the drawing benefit the Happy Trails Children's Foundation and Cooper Home for abused children.

  Bohlin Silver Saddle Winner
Saturday, May 19, and the lucky winner was Duane Boyer, of Haines, OR.
  The winning ticket was #4907.
I was born and grew up in Northeastern Oregon, and my family has been here since 1864, when my great-grandfather,
wife and kids headed west from Missouri on the Oregon Trail in a covered wagon, as a part of one of the wagon trains
headed west that year. I grew up on a farm and ranch near Haines, Oregon, in Baker Valley, and still live in the same
location. I am semi-retired from farming and ranching, but still have saddle horses and Belgian draft horses, both of which
have always been a part of our operation. We fed the cattle with the draft horses, often with a large bobsled when the
snows arrived. (We had about 3 feet on the ground much of the winter of 2016-2017.) I also teach guitar classes one
afternoon a week at Eastern Oregon University, located in LaGrande, Oregon, and have done that since I graduated from
college. (I always scheduled my classes so that I had time to feed the cattle before I left for school.)
I have a grown son and daughter, and my daughter (who grew up watching her dozens of videos of old Roy Rogers
movies) and I used to do both cowboy action shooting and mounted shooting, which is where I first heard about the Happy
Trails Foundation. I have bought tickets for both the saddle and the Silver Screen Legends drawings for a number of
years, as I thought it was a worthy cause, and, who knows, I might win something sometime. (Little did I know!!)

  FRIEND OF THE FOUNDATION PASSES
  By Joel “Dutch” Dortch

Prescott, AZ. Jim Lockwood, of Legends in Leather in Prescott, AZ passed away on Wednesday, October
25, 2023, after an illness of 3 ½ years. Jim was a master at recreating the fancy signature holster rigs of the
Hollywood cowboy stars from the Golden Age of the westerns in the 1940’s and 1950’s. For example, Gene
Autry’s holster rig didn’t look anything like Roy’s and neither one looked anything like Hoppy’s or the Lone
Ranger’s. Each had their own signature rig and Jim made them plus a multitude of others.

Jim was a knowledgeable and huge fan of western movies and TV shows. His favorite movie was Shane
from 1953 starring Alan Ladd, Van Heflin, Jean Arthur, Brandon de Wilde, and Jack Palance as the evil villain,
Jack Wilson. The first holster rig that Jim made was a replica of the Alan Ladd Shane outfit with the sterling
silver wagon wheel type round conchos on the belt. The second rig he made was the Jack Wilson double
holster rig. When friends and acquaintances saw the Shane outfit, they asked Jim to make one for them. Thus,
  a business was born!

Jim was the God Father of the Silver Screen Legend project that has raised well over a million dollars for
the Happy Trails Children’s Foundation and the hundreds of boys who have gone through the program for
abused boys at the Cooper Home in Apple Valley, CA. Over a period of 20 plus years, Jim made more than 30
replica holster rigs that he donated to the foundation to help raise money for the boys in our care! As a result of
Jim’s endeavors, the Happy Trails Children’s Foundation is still the only known children’s charity in the country
today that has anything to do with firearms. We are proud of that connection and the fact that our tickets are still
only $10 each. The same price since the beginning way back in 1997.
